Helen has been based in Cape Town since 2008. Research interests over this time have ranged from the molecular epidemiology of drug-resistant TB, through assessing the impact of new diagnostics for TB to appropriate models of care for drug-resistant TB treatment. Further research interests include: the use of new and repurposed drugs in novel treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB, cost analysis of different approaches for drug-resistant TB treatment and the application of a human rights approach to improving the effectiveness of, and access to treatment. A key aim of Helen\u2019s research is direct translation of research findings into policy.<\/p>\n<p>Current projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The molecular epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Khayelitsha, South Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of novel diagnostics for TB and TB drug susceptibility testing.<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of contact management for individuals exposed to TB and drug-resistant TB in Khayelitsha.<\/li>\n<li>The impact of HIV on the risk of acquisition of TB drug resistance during first-line TB treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Investigating pathways through care for individuals with TB in the Western Cape, South Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Site Co-PI<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":572,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"nf_dc_page":"","_et_pb_use_builder":"off","_et_pb_old_content":"<p class=\"font_0\"><strong>Dr. Salgame<\/strong> is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Center for Emerging and Re-Emerging Pathogens, Rutgers University. She is the Director of the MD\/PhD Program and the Graduate Medical Research Program. Her research focuses on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and host immune mechanisms that protect against infection and progression to disease. Her research team also studies the biology and host response of clinical strains of M. tuberculosis with differing transmissibility. Her group conducts these investigations in humans and animal models. She and her collaborators also perform biomarker studies at several international sites. Dr. Salgame is on the Editorial Board of Infection and Immunity and is also an Associate Editor for PLOS Pathogens. In addition to her research pursuits, Dr. Salgame has managed and led a range of science training programs. She is Program Director on a T32 training grant in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation.
