She has served as a senior statistician on several ongoing and completed trials, including IMPAACT P1041, a Phase III trial that evaluated the efficacy of primary isoniazid preventive therapy for prevention of TB in children born to women with HIV. She is a senior statistician on several TB trials conducted by IMPAACT and ACTG. She began a highly productive collaboration with the Rutgers team while on the faculty at UMDNJ\/Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Her research focus for over more than 15 years now has been fighting TB through collaborative research through the conduct of clinical trials of preventive and therapeutic treatments and evaluating diagnostics and the conduct of observational studies that help elucidate bacterial and host factors associated with transmission and treatment efficacy. She has participated in research capacity building around biostatistics, data management and bioinformatics since completing her doctoral training and postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health. Having lived several years in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa after finishing her training while subsequent work at the Harvard School of Public Health makes her an ideal collaborator for multi-national, multi-disciplinary TB research. She is the Director of the MD\/PhD Program and the Graduate Medical Research Program. Her research focuses on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and host immune mechanisms that protect against infection and progression to disease. Her research team also studies the biology and host response of clinical strains of M. tuberculosis with differing transmissibility. Her group conducts these investigations in humans and animal models. She and her collaborators also perform biomarker studies at several international sites. Dr. Salgame is on the Editorial Board of Infection and Immunity and is also an Associate Editor for PLOS Pathogens. In addition to her research pursuits, Dr. Salgame has managed and led a range of science training programs. She is Program Director on a T32 training grant in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation.
